Speech by Mr. Jorge Mora, Chief Executive Officer of Veolia Environment Group (Asia)

Mr. Jorge Mora: Good morningladies and gentlemen! We firmly believe that the future of our company and the future of our industry are gradually emerging in China. We use the international experiences we gained before as a tool to make our Chinese branch a good example for the whole company, this is unprecedented. Our Chinese branch has always been promoting the company’s future development while at the same time, cooperating with the international suppliers so as to maximize the interests of our clients.

Ever since China's rapid economic development has brought a number of challenges, Veolia Environment Group has been committed to the environmental protection cause in China and other regions. According to Article 9 of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China, water, rivers, grasslands, and other resources are state-owned. The government protects animals and plants, and bans any organization or individual from occupying resources. This has been incorporated into the Constitution in 1982, which is a great shock to me, for it is five years earlier than what has been firstly stipulated of the same kind.

We believe that we should make commitments to our clients. With a wider room of activities, we can make greater contribution to each client; no matter he is a civil servant of the United States, or an Egyptian citizen, or an Australia's coal miner, or every Chinese client. We still believe that regional social responsibility is the driving force of globalization, and it will create more interests and greater value for shareholders.

In the process of the ecological development, we have already brought about a new kind of competition, which has a saying in the political and economic development around the world. This trend is as unshakable as the economic power itself. We have put forward a fundamental basis that all creatures are interdependent. This new ethic standard is just the environmental protectors have always been expected and established. They call for everyone to share for it. In his report made on the National People’s Congress, President Hu said that we must adhere to sustainable development, adopt a open development model, expand the scale of productions, realize a rational ecological and environmental infrastructure, so as to build a energy-conserving and environmental-friendly society. Shouldn’t the nature and all creatures worth our loving? Shouldn’t’ they be protected from being harmed or even destroyed? We must have the whole world in our mind. We must be committed to the environmental protection. These are the goals we are pursuing. I am convinced that any individual or organization could achieve that.

I’d like to quote a very old African proverb, “If you think yourself is too small to change the world, please just spend one night with a mosquito.” I recalled that one famous person has said it before, just to show the same idea,” though it seems that this has nothing to with you, but the most important thing is that you must do it.”
