BACKGROUND
As the variables which influence the global economic development increased, economies around the World are confronted with a new round of tests. The economies of China and other Asia-Pacific countries as well as their increasingly cooperative relations face many new challenges and fresh opportunities.
How do the global corporate leaders, those who play an essential role in the world economic reality, view the future of the world economy? What are their expectations? What are the new strategies they have developed about international economic cooperation?
Besides, what are the opinions of the senior government officials across the globe, especially those of the Central Government and local governments at all levels of the world's fourth largest and most energetic economy ~ China? What are their in-depth reflections on the international economic cooperation strategies ?
As we know, the year of 2008 marks the 30th anniversary of the beginning of China's Reform and Opening-up process. Increasingly deepening its commitment to the global economic integration process, China has witnessed great achievements in the opening-up and international cooperation. However, as is known to all, the situations in the East, Middle and West China are different, and so are the requirements they have on international cooperation. In East China, international economic cooperation has been well developed while in the Middle and West China, there is still much room for improvement.
On May 12th, 2008, Sichuan Province of China was stricken by an earthquake measuring 8 degrees on the Richter scale, which incurred unredeemable trauma and substantial economic losses upon its people. According to a rough estimate, the investment in fixed assets for reconstruction of the quake-hit areas will exceed a trillion RMB. The reconstruction work calls for support, participation and collaboration from the international community.
Cooperation, innovation and development are the themes of the world economy. "Reform the look of the world, innovate the way of cooperation" is the keynote of the 4th International Summit for CEOS & Provincial Governors and Mayors.
